Poisoned Ground: The Lasting Environmental Toll of America's B-36 Peacemaker Bases

The B-36 Peacemaker's operational bases were marvels of mid-century industrial construction, carved from deserts, plains, and coastal flatlands to house the largest aircraft America had ever built. Decades after the last Peacemaker was scrapped, many of those same sites carry a different kind of legacy — one measured not in deterrent capability but in contaminated aquifers, corroded infrastructure, and communities still negotiating the consequences of Cold War aviation. An examination of what was left behind reveals a history that official narratives have rarely acknowledged.

Building for Giants

The physical demands of the B-36 were extraordinary. With a wingspan of 230 feet and a gross takeoff weight approaching 410,000 pounds in later configurations, the aircraft required runways, hangars, and support infrastructure on a scale that had no precedent in American military aviation. Between the late 1940s and the mid-1950s, the Air Force undertook massive construction programs at installations including Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth, Texas; Walker Air Force Base near Roswell, New Mexico; Fairchild Air Force Base outside Spokane, Washington; and Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, South Dakota, among others.

These projects consumed millions of tons of concrete, steel, and asphalt. They also consumed enormous quantities of industrial chemicals — fuel, hydraulic fluid, degreasing solvents, and lubricants — that were handled, stored, and disposed of according to the environmental standards of the era, which is to say with virtually no consideration for groundwater protection or soil contamination.

The Chemical Inventory of Cold War Aviation

To understand the environmental legacy of B-36 bases, it is necessary to appreciate the chemical complexity of maintaining aircraft of that scale and sophistication. Each B-36 required regular servicing of ten engines — six radial piston engines and four jet pods in later variants — along with hydraulic systems, fuel systems, and electrical components spread across a fuselage that stretched 162 feet from nose to tail.

Aviation gasoline and JP-4 jet fuel were stored in massive underground and above-ground tank farms at each base. Trichloroethylene (TCE), a chlorinated solvent widely used in the aviation industry for metal degreasing, was applied in industrial quantities. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were present in electrical transformers and other equipment throughout the bases. Lead-based paints coated structures and aircraft components.

The disposal practices of the period were, by contemporary standards, deeply inadequate. Waste solvents were frequently poured into unlined pits or drainage ditches. Fuel spills, which were common given the volume of aviation operations, were often left to dissipate naturally. Underground storage tanks, many of which have since corroded and leaked, were installed without the leak-detection systems now required by federal regulation.

Walker Air Force Base: A Case Study in Lingering Contamination

Few former B-36 installations illustrate the long arc of environmental consequence more clearly than Walker Air Force Base, which closed in 1967 as part of a broader base realignment and was subsequently redeveloped as the Roswell Industrial Air Center. Walker was a primary B-36 base during the aircraft's operational life and hosted some of the most intensive Peacemaker operations in the SAC inventory.

Environmental assessments conducted after the base closure identified extensive contamination across the former installation. TCE was detected in groundwater at concentrations significantly exceeding federal safe drinking water standards. Fuel hydrocarbons were found in soil samples across former fuel storage and maintenance areas. The remediation process, which fell under the Air Force's Installation Restoration Program, extended across decades and involved complex negotiations between federal authorities, the City of Roswell, and the State of New Mexico.

Residents of the surrounding area have, over the years, raised concerns about health impacts potentially linked to groundwater contamination. While establishing definitive causal links between specific contaminants and health outcomes is methodologically complex, environmental historians note that the pattern of concern at Walker mirrors that observed at dozens of other former military aviation installations across the country.

Carswell and the Urban Complication

The environmental calculus becomes considerably more complex at bases situated within or adjacent to major metropolitan areas. Carswell Air Force Base, which served as the primary home of the B-36 and housed the 7th Bombardment Wing throughout most of the aircraft's operational life, sits on the western edge of Fort Worth, Texas.

Now operating as Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth, the former Carswell site has been subject to ongoing environmental monitoring and remediation. Contamination plumes associated with historical aviation operations have required sustained attention from both military environmental programs and state regulators. The proximity of the installation to residential neighborhoods and municipal water infrastructure has added urgency — and political complexity — to remediation efforts.

Environmental historian Dr. Sarah Elkington, who has studied Cold War military base contamination extensively, observes that urban bases present particular challenges. "The contamination doesn't respect the fence line," she has noted in published research. "Groundwater moves. And when it moves toward a city, the conversation changes from a purely technical remediation question to a public health and political question."

The Regulatory Framework That Arrived Too Late

Much of the environmental damage associated with B-36-era operations predates the regulatory architecture that would eventually govern such activities. The National Environmental Policy Act was not signed into law until 1969, a decade after the last B-36 was retired. The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, which established federal standards for hazardous waste management, did not arrive until 1976. The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act — commonly known as Superfund — followed in 1980.

By the time these frameworks existed, the contamination at former B-36 bases was already decades old, dispersed through soil and groundwater, and in many cases poorly documented. The military had kept records of operations but rarely of disposal practices. Reconstructing the environmental history of these sites has required painstaking archival research, subsurface sampling, and, in many cases, the recollections of aging veterans who remembered, often imperfectly, how waste materials were handled.

What Remains and What Is Owed

Several former B-36 bases have achieved regulatory closure on their contamination sites, meaning that remediation has progressed to a point where ongoing risk to human health and the environment is judged to be within acceptable limits. Others remain active remediation sites, with groundwater treatment systems operating continuously and monitoring wells sampled on regular schedules.

For the communities surrounding these installations, the legacy is mixed. Some have benefited substantially from the conversion of former military land to civilian aviation, industrial, or commercial use. Others carry the burden of contamination that has complicated economic development and, in some cases, affected property values and public health.

The B-36 Peacemaker is rightly remembered as one of the most consequential aircraft in American military history — a machine that helped define an era and shape a doctrine. But a complete accounting of that legacy requires acknowledging what the aircraft and the vast industrial apparatus that supported it left in the ground. The cost of deterrence, it turns out, was not paid entirely in dollars or in the strategic currency of the Cold War. Some portion of it is still being paid today, in the slow work of remediation and the patient monitoring of wells.
